Winter Driving Tips

For most of us, winter driving can be scary. Here are some winter driving tips from the experts.

Winter Mark
Tires marked with this symbol meet the requirements for excellent snow traction performance. They are designed for driving in snowy conditions.

 Winter Driving Checklist

  • Check the condition of your tires and check air pressures regularly. A tire can lose one pound of air pressure for every five-degree drop in temperature.
  • Avoid mixing tires of different tread patterns, construction and size. Replace any that are damaged or have worn treads.
  • It's recommended you install four winter tires, even on front-wheel drive vehicles, for best control in slippery and snowy conditions.
  • Stay alert, slow down, and in control, and always keep a safe distance between you and other vehicles.
  • Take your vehicle in for a winter maintenance check-up. This will ensure your battery, belts, exhaust system, wipers, ignition, hoses, radiator, oil, lights and the heater/defroster are ready for the extreme temperature changes.
  • Always add gas line anti-freeze when fueling.
  • Keep your fuel tank sufficiently full, as well as your windshield washer fluid, and make sure it is rated for -40 C.
  • Always clear all snow and ice from your windshields, lights and roof.  This ensures good visibility, and keeps snow and ice from flying off and impeding other drivers.
  • Always keep emergency supplies handy in your vehicle:  booster cables, road flares, flashlight, blanket, non-perishable energy foods (granola bars, chocolate), first aid kit, extra clothing and footwear, matches, candle, winter gloves and a cell phone.
  • Before longer trips, check weather forecasts and road conditions.
